Continuing Education Meeting, October 16th, 2019, 7:30 pm @ RCE

Posted by on Sep 12, 2019 in Continuing Education

Please join us Wednesday October 16th, 2019, 7:30-9 pm for our Continuing Education Meeting to be held at the Colleen Fraser Building, 300 North Ave East, Westfield NJ, 2nd floor.

Our guest speaker will be James Occi. Topic – “Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases in New Jersey”

Researchers with the Rutgers Center for Vector Biology recently published the first scientific list of tick species confirmed in New Jersey, revealing that there are 11 known types, nine of them indigenous to North America and two invasive, including the recently identified Asian longhorned tick. Writing in the Journal of Medical Entomology, authors James L. Occi, Dina M. Fonseca, and Andrea M. Egizi (GSNB’14) also revealed that there are possibly seven other species present in the state—or will be…

Jim is a recovering microbiologist after 30 years in research at Merck Research labs and New Jersey Medical School. Jim is now working for the New Jersey Department of Health where he is involved in various state-wide surveillance programs. One such program is focused on mosquito surveillance – searching for mosquito-born viruses throughout the state’s mosquito populations. Jim is also assisting in implementing a state-wide tick surveillance program – the first of it’s kind in NJ.

Jim is also a PhD student in the department of Entomology at Rutgers University and wants to be a medical entomologist when he grows up.

You are welcome to bring a guest to this event. Please RSVP by emailing Tina Helmstetter at TinaMac208@gmail.com or text 908-763-6773. Hope to see you soon.
