Below are the offices and candidates for the Master Gardeners Executive BoardAlthough the candidates are unopposed, we encourage you to vote as a show of support for them.  Voting will take place at the meeting on December 9.  Or you can vote at the Extension Office. The deadline for voting is December 16, 2019.

-The Nominations Committee: Jayne Graepel, Robert Platt, Richard Leister

The term of office for the listed positions is January 1, 2020 –December 31, 2022.

 Second Vice President:       

  • Tom Beisler, class of 2018

Volunteer Hours to Date:  78.5

Committee Involvement:  Plant Sale, Emerald Ash Borer Survey, Master Garden mowing and maintenance, MG Docent Program.

Third Vice President:

Committee Involvement: Third Vice President, Herb Garden and Helpline, Spring Garden Fair, MG Docent Program

Please join us this Wednesday November 20, 2019, 7:30-9 pm for our Continuing Education Meeting to be held at the Colleen Fraser Building, 300 North Ave East, Westfield NJ, 2nd floor.

Our guest speaker will be Attorney Rachel Roat. Topic – “Tree Law for Gardeners”-

Attorney Roat will discuss basic principles, and laws governing private trees, and discuss disputes between neighbors over trees and offer strategies for successful resolution.

Master Gardeners Approved Volunteer opportunity: Daffodil planting in Rahway November 17

Volunteers Requested for Daffodil Planting in Rahway

Date: Sunday, November 17 at 10:30AM.

Location: Saint George’s & Central Ave across from the Rutgers rain garden.
(The park with RSI bank sign.)

We will be naturalizing daffodils to give Rahway a blast of spring color every year.  This will be a beautiful display Union County citizens can all enjoy for years to come.
We also request helpers for task support such as sprinkling bone meal and handing out daffodils bulbs and water.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Multiflora Rose is Killing the Garden Roses. Learn How to Get Rid of It.

The cultivated roses in the Demo Garden are apparently being infected by a disease coming from the multiflora roses outside the fence.

On Wednesday, November 13, the Watchung Reservation Invasive Plants (WRIP) crew  will come to the MG Area around 10:15-10:30 a.m.  It would be great if some MGs could meet with the WRIP crew to learn about how to eradicate invasives and maybe save the roses inside the fence.

Our next Continuing Education Meeting – Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30 pm

Please join us on Wednesday, November 20th, 2019, 7:30-9 pm for our Continuing Education Meeting to be held at the Colleen Fraser Building, 300 North Ave East, Westfield NJ, 2nd floor.

Our topic and guest speaker will be: “Tree Law for Gardeners”- with Attorney, Rachel Roat.

Attorney Roat will discuss basic principles, and laws governing private trees, and discuss disputes between neighbors over trees and offer strategies for successful resolution.

Rachel received her Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1980. As a volunteer on the Master Gardener helpline Middlesex County, she became aware of the need for a basic understanding of the law of trees and how tree law and arborculture intersect in a variety of areas.
